Tonight I am blogging out of sheer happiness. As I sit here smiling I feel that these words must be put to paper, or at the very least keyboard, so that I might remember and share this moment of joy.
My friends and peers in large urban areas often ask me “What is it like to be in a grade 7 to 12 school?” Tonight my answer is clear. It is fantastic!
Our school, GDCI, is well known for dramatic productions. Our secondary students bring home the hardware and numerous accolades at the Sear’s Festival every year. One of our grade 8 teachers, Mrs. VanNie decided to partner up with our head of the Arts department, Mr. Armour, in order to produce a grade seven and eight show this year. They decided upon the two act play “Cue for Treason” and the show was born.
Mr. Armour’s technical production managers, lighting crew, artists, stage managers, set designers, and talented musicians all came together to coach, mentor, encourage, and teach our young aspiring actors.
Tonight’s show was a fantastic success because of the collaboration between our oldest students and our youngest students. I have heard it said that you really don’t know something until you are able to teach it to another. If tonight’s success is any indication of that, I would say our students truly “know” drama at GDCI!
What is it like to work at a 7 to 12 school? It is exciting! Tonight I watched some students discover a passion for the stage. I witnessed creativity and collaboration. I sat back and watched perseverance and dedication pay off. It was the best of times and I feel like a proud mother!
