Lean on Me

Written by:

Rick Hansen writes in Craig and Marc Keilburger’s new book Living Me to We: The Guide for Socially Conscious Canadians “At the age of 16, I felt in order to be an ordinary human being I had to be self-reliant and independent. In reality, I had to learn to be interdependent and connected.”

I am reminded time and time again that we are better together!   Every day at school I see interdependence and connections:

1.  On the soccer field the girls’ team is more efficient and strategic when they pass the ball and communicate to their teammates their position during play.

2.  During problem solving in math, group members put their heads together to determine the best way to tackle the problem at hand.

3.  At a Professional Learning Community (PLC), teachers collaborate to solve unique challenges in the classroom that would stump anyone if they were left on their own to solve them.

4.  When I am facing a new situation (which is really every day right now!) I seek out the wisdom of trusted peers, our school principal, Ms. Salmon, or our superintendent, Jodie Baker.

Rick Hansen remains an inspiration for me.  I remember when he began the “Man in Motion” Tour in 1985.  When asked about his success regarding the tour he said “I had an amazing team. They challenged, encouraged and supported me and asked nothing in return. I feel incredibly privileged to have had them with me. Without them, the dream would have been absolutely impossible.”

At the end of this year I am certain that I will look back and echo Rick Hansen’s words…GDCI Elementary is a place where people value collaboration!

The video upload today showcases some of our Grade 7 students singing “Lean on Me”.  What perfect lyrics to conclude with!
