Learning from the DabbaWalas

Today our board held a District Leader’s Day where all the leaders in our system gathered for professional development and important system messages.  In order to inspire and motivate us, our senior staff invited storyteller Doug Keeley to talk about leadership.  Mr. Keeley’s presentation was creative and powerful.  I can honestly claim “I laughed, I cried, I would go again and again!”

One of the many stories shared with us today was about the DabbaWalas of Mumbai.

I have been thinking about this unique workforce ever since. Think about their level of success – despite the low literacy levels of their staff.  Think about the complexity of the task they undertake every day and their remarkable small margin of error.  Think about how they have maintained and grown their business since 1890.  Most importantly, think about the teamwork!

When I think about our staff at GDCI Elementary it is my hope that we can be like the DabbaWalas!  We will work together towards one common goal and we will fix our focus there .  We will all share in the work of getting us there.  We will do so with a spirit of happiness and togetherness.  Thank you Doug Keeley for sharing this with our system today and thank you Avon Maitland District School Board for bringing this message to us!
